Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Coastal mangrove swamps, canals, and freshwater estuaries in Southeast Asia. Found hiding under leaves.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Family Gobiidae. Short, cylindrical body. Fused pelvic fins act as a suction cup. Grows to a maximum of 4 cm.
Social Behavior: Schooling bottom dweller. Males are highly territorial and choose caves which they defend from rivals.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Alternate black and yellow vertical bands. Breeding males develop a deeper golden coloration.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Provide a sand substrate with numerous shelters like clay pots, coconut shells, and small pipes. Plants are tolerated.
Diet and Feeding: Fussy feeder. Ignores dry flakes. Feed live or frozen artemia, daphnia, and bloodworms directly on the substrate.
Water Quality: Prefers light brackish water (SG 1.002-1.005) but lives in hard freshwater. Keep water clean and well-filtered.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Safe with active midwater fish. Avoid housing with large, predatory bottom fish that could swallow them.
Aquarium Breeding: Cave spawner. Spawning occurs inside small tubes. The male guards the eggs until they hatch in about 5 days.
Risks and Diseases: Starvation if not fed live/frozen foods. Prone to skin parasites if water conditions deteriorate.
