Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Sheltered brackish lagoons, mangrove creeks, and tidal rock pools in Southeast Asia.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Family Gobiidae. Elongated body, rounded head, large fan-like pectoral fins. Grows to 4.5 cm.
Social Behavior: Peaceful but territorial. Establish small shelters under stones. Best kept in a harem with one male and several females.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Brown-grey body with irregular yellowish longitudinal lines. Males have larger fins and brighter breeding dress.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Sandy substrate with overlapping rocks to create caves and crevices. Moderate current is tolerated.
Diet and Feeding: Benthic carnivore. Feed frozen artemia, daphnia, and finely chopped mysis. Can adapt to small high-quality sinking pellets.
Water Quality: Requires stable brackish water (SG 1.005-1.010). Sensitive to high nitrates; ensure regular partial water changes.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Safe with peaceful brackish tankmates like mollies and glassfish. Avoid large predatory fish.
Aquarium Breeding: Cave spawner. Eggs are glued to a rocky crevice and guarded by the male. Fry require rotifers.
Risks and Diseases: Vulnerable to external parasites if salinity is too low. Keep parameters stable.
