Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Tropical Western Pacific: Ryukyu Islands to Taiwan, Philippines, Palau, Guam, and Mariana Islands. Found in swift, clear mountain streams.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Gobiidae. Slender cylindrical body, reaches up to 4.5 cm in length. Strong pelvic suction disk.
Social Behavior: Peaceful. Males establish small territories on rocks and display their bright orange fins to attract females.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Males display bright orange or reddish dorsal fins and a greenish body with metallic hues. Females are whitish with black lines.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a river manifold or powerful filter outlet in a tank of at least 60 liters. Provide smooth stones and pebbles. Strong light for algae growth. Tight lid required.
Diet and Feeding: Herbivorous biofilm grazer. Needs natural algae and cyanobacteria. Supplement with spirulina wafers and repashy gel.
Water Quality: Pristine, highly oxygenated water. Temperature 22-28 °C, pH 6.5-7.5, GH 2-12, KH 1-8. Low nitrates are crucial.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Peaceful. Suitable for hillstream tanks with danios, white clouds, and freshwater shrimp. Avoid aggressive species.
Aquarium Breeding: Amphidromous life cycle. Spawns in freshwater, but larvae drift to the sea and require marine conditions before returning to freshwater as post-larvae.
Risks and Diseases: High starvation risk in newly established tanks. Exceptional jumpers, capable of climbing glass panes.
