Peaceful Betta
Betta imbellis
The Peaceful Betta (*Betta imbellis*) is the calm and elegant cousin of the infamous fighting fish (*Betta splendens*). As its scientific name suggests (imbellis means 'not warlike'), this superb wild-type species with its brilliant iridescent green and blue livery dispels the myth that all Bettas must be kept in isolation. Perfect for peaceful planted community aquariums, the Imbellis even allows multiple males to be kept in the same tank, provided there is sufficient space and cover, giving the aquarist the enchanting spectacle of their harmless ritual displays (flaring) without bloodshed.

Description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Thailand and Sumatra). Inhabits calm swamps, rice paddies and marginal watercourses rich in marsh plants, often in sympatry (but ecologically separated) with other species of the splendens complex.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Peaceful Betta / Crescent Betta (Betta imbellis). Belongs to the "splendens" complex (classic fighting fish). The adjective "imbellis" means "unwarlike". Physically more slender and with short, rounded fins compared to hyper-selected domestic forms.
Social Behavior: Despite its appearance, males are much less aggressive than B. splendens and, if the aquarium is densely planted (min. 80 cm / 32 inches), they tolerate each other, rarely clashing to the death. They have a shy and elusive character.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Extremely fascinating. Males show a dark body covered with intense metallic blue or green iridescent scales. The caudal fin has a typical, showy red "crescent" on the margin. Females are beige and devoid of reflections.
Care and observations
Aquarium Setup: An aquarium of 60 cm (24 inches) and up is ideal, very densely planted (Vallisneria, mosses, water lilies) to create infinite visual barriers. Total absence of surface current is indispensable (use spray-bars or sponge filters).
Diet and Feeding: Mainly insectivorous. Feeds at the surface or in suspension. Accepts specific granular feeds for Betta, but frozen food (bloodworms, brine shrimp) is indispensable to simulate the insects it feeds on in nature.
Water Quality: Survives in wide ranges, but the best colorations are obtained in soft, clean and warm waters (26-28°C / 79-82°F), slightly ambered with catappa leaves. Tank lid mandatory to keep the labyrinth organ from cooling down.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Excellent for quiet nano-communities with microrasboras (Microdevario, Boraras) and pangios. DO NOT keep with Betta splendens (they will fight) nor with "nipper" fish like tiger barbs that would destroy its fins.
Aquarium Reproduction: Bubble nester. The male builds the foam raft under a leaf. Reproduction (with the typical "embrace") is prolific. The male chases the female away and defends the eggs until free swimming.
Risks and Diseases: Hybridization. It easily hybridizes with domestic forms of Betta splendens, destroying the purity of the wild genetic line. Also avoid pairing with B. smaragdina and B. mahachaiensis.
Fish profile
- Temperament
- Pacifico e gregario (eccezionale per un Betta). I maschi si esibiscono in parate visive mozzafiato ma raramente arrivano allo scontro fisico.
- Diet
- Carnivoro puro. Sebbene possano accettare micro-pellet di alta qualità, la base della dieta deve essere cibo vivo o congelato: chironomus, dafnie, artemie e moscerini della frutta in superficie.

- Sex ratio
- Prospera in coppia o in piccoli gruppi. In vasche adeguate (80+ litri) è possibile tenere 2-3 maschi e diverse femmine assieme per assistere alle loro parate competitive innocue.
- Feeding frequency
- 1-2 volte al giorno in piccole quantità. Prestare attenzione a non sovralimentarli per evitare costipazioni.
- Bioload
- Molto Basso
- Flow
- Corrente Nulla o Quasi Nulla
- Jump risk
- Covered tank required
- Reproduction
