Plakat Betta

Betta splendens var. Plakat

The Plakat Betta is the short-finned form of the fighting fish. Not having the lethal ballast of long fins, it is a healthy, incredibly agile, muscular fish and is almost never subject to fin rot. This agility, however, makes it a formidable and lethal predator. Unlike the slow Halfmoon, a Plakat will actively hunt down and tear apart any shrimp or small fish in its tank. It needs a tightly sealed aquarium (it's an expert jumper) and a strictly carnivorous diet. It requires absolute isolation.

Description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Domestic variety (Betta splendens). The term "Plakat" derives from the Thai "Pla Kad" (biting fish/fighting fish). It is the domestic form morphologically closest to the wild type.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Plakat Betta. Unlike classic pet store fighting fish (Veiltail or Halfmoon) which have oversized and bulky tails, the Plakat has short, stocky and very stiff fins. It has a compact, massive body made for blazing sprints.

Social Behavior: Extremely aggressive. This is the form traditionally selected in past centuries for fish fighting in Asian villages. It will not stop until the rival (or its image in the mirror) is destroyed.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Bred in countless colors (Copper, Black, Red, Mustard Gas). To differentiate a Plakat male from a female (who has equally short fins), look at the angular shape of the anal fin and the very long saber-like ventral fins of the male.

Care and observations

Aquarium Setup: Covered aquarium (absolutely, jumps very high) of 20-30 liters (5-8 gallons). Compared to long-finned versions, the Plakat can tolerate a very slight water current provided by a filter, being a tireless and powerful swimmer.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivore. It does not have the laziness of the Halfmoons: it will pounce on food violently. Avoid overfeeding with flakes; prefer bloodworms, daphnia and premium quality pellets.

Water Quality: Being more robust and lacking enormous "sails", it is less prone to fin rot caused by rubbing, but still requires warm water (26-28°C / 79-82°F) and very low nitrates.

Compatibility and Tankmates: To be kept isolated. Thanks to its speed, a Plakat is capable of chasing down and tearing to pieces not only other Bettas, but also snails, shrimp and small schooling fish that it would otherwise try to prey on.

Aquarium Reproduction: Bubble nester. Among all domestic varieties, Plakats are the most efficient breeders. The male wraps the female quickly and perfectly thanks to his agility. The female must be removed immediately to prevent her from being killed.

Risks and Diseases: Mirror stress. Plakats overreact to their own image reflected on the bare glass of the tank, constantly puffing out their gills (flaring) to the point of lethal exhaustion.
