Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Southern and Southeastern Asia: India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia. Inhabits brackish estuaries, river mouths, and slow coastal streams.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Gobiidae. Glass-like translucent body with large silvery eyes. Reaches a maximum length of 3.0 cm.
Social Behavior: Peaceful and schooling. Unlike most benthic gobies, it swims actively in the midwater column in large groups.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body is nearly transparent, exposing internal organs and the skeletal structure. Tiny black chromatophores. Minimal sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Suitable for setups of at least 30 liters. Can be kept in medium-hard freshwater or brackish water (SG 1.002-1.005). Provide salt-tolerant plants.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Feeds on micro-zooplankton. Accepts live baby brine shrimp, copepods, and very fine prepared dry foods.
Water Quality: Maintain stable parameters: temperature 22-28 °C, pH 7.0-8.2, GH 8-20, KH 6-15. Sensitive to nitrogenous waste.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Peaceful. Must be kept in groups of 6 or more. Suitable tankmates include bumblebee gobies or small rainbowfish.
Aquarium Breeding: Spawns on plants. Parents do not care for eggs. Raising the tiny fry requires rotifers and greenwater.
Risks and Diseases: Vulnerable to sudden changes in salinity. High starvation risk if housed with active, competitive feeders.
