Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Indo-Pacific, from East Africa to Australia. Inhabits estuaries, lagoons, and river basins with sandy or muddy substrates.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Family Gobiidae. Features an elongated body with a large upward-pointing mouth and a bilobed tongue. Grows up to 30 cm.

Social Behavior: Solitary, aggressive bottom dweller. Digs shallow depressions in the sand and guards its bottom territory aggressively.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Sand-grey body with irregular dark blotches along the lateral line. Males have longer soft dorsal fins.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Large footprint tank with fine sand substrate. Provide heavy rocks and hollow driftwood to create territory divides.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Feeds on prawns, mussels, lancefish, and frozen krill. Accepts large carnivorous sinking pellets.

Water Quality: Highly adaptable. Grows well in hard freshwater or low salinity brackish water. Ensure powerful mechanical filtration.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Best kept with large midwater fish. Do not house with any small or slow-moving benthic species.

Aquarium Breeding: Cave spawner. Adhesive eggs are laid on rock undersides. The male guards the nest diligently until hatching.

Risks and Diseases: Skin scrapes are common if gravel is sharp. Use soft sand to avoid secondary bacterial infections.
