Species description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Red Sea and tropical Indo-Pacific, from East Africa to Micronesia. Inhabits sheltered sandy areas near coastal coral reefs.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Family Gobiidae. Commonly known as Hector's Goby. Possesses an elongated body and a slightly more pointed snout than A. rainfordi. Maximum size around 6.5 cm.
Social Behavior: Extremely calm, peaceful, and shy. Lives in close association with the substrate where it spends its time foraging or taking refuge under rocks.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Dark body, almost black, crossed by bright yellow longitudinal stripes and a black ocellus bordered with yellow on the dorsal fin. No sexual dimorphism, females are slightly broader when gravid.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 80 liters with a good layer of fine sand and live rock rich in microalgae. A tight-fitting lid is essential to prevent jumping.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivore. Feeds mainly by sifting sand and picking plant debris from rocks. Supplement with small frozen foods (copepods, cyclops, fine brine shrimp).
Water Quality: Stable parameters: temperature 22-27°C, pH 8.0-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025. Highly sensitive to elevated nitrates.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Excellent for peaceful nano reefs. Avoid aggressive, fast-swimming tankmates or fish that compete for the same sandy food source.
Aquarium Reproduction: Very difficult and uncommon in captivity. Spawns in small caves where eggs are guarded by the male.
Risks and Diseases: Starvation if introduced to overly clean tanks or tanks with coarse, sharp substrate. Susceptible to stress-induced external parasites.
