Species description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Eastern Central Pacific, from the Gulf of California to Ecuador, including the Galapagos Islands. Associated with rocky bottoms and coral reefs down to 15 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the family Gobiidae. Reaches about 4.5 cm. Tapered cylindrical body with pelvic fins modified into an adhesive disc to anchor itself in currents.

Social Behavior: Peaceful and social fish with quiet species. Performs a role as a facultative cleaner, removing ectoparasites from the skin of larger host fish.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Dark olive or greenish-gray body characterized by a bright orange-red head striped with vertical neon blue lines. Dark spots distributed on the nape.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Mini-reef tank of at least 40 liters (10 gallons). Plenty of live rock positioned to create narrow crevices and cracks where the fish loves to rest.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivore with a preference for animal-based foods. Feed very fine frozen foods (baby brine shrimp, mysis, cyclopeeze). Accepts micro-granule dry food.

Water Quality: Temperature 22-27°C (72-78°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.026. Water must be well oxygenated and free of harmful nitrogenous compounds.

Compatibility and Tankmates: 100% reef-safe. Coexists peacefully with corals and invertebrates. Must not be paired with aggressive species or bottom-dwelling predators.

Aquarium Reproduction: Often spawns in snail shells or plastic pipes in the aquarium. Parental care is handled by the male, which actively fans the clutch.

Risks and Diseases: Easy jump risk from the tank if startled. Ensure the aquarium is tightly covered. Sensitive to sudden fluctuations in salinity levels.
