Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Western Central Pacific: endemic to the Fiji Islands. Inhabits shallow, protected sandy lagoons and patch reefs at depths of 1 to 15 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Blenniidae. Features venom glands at the base of large hollow canine fangs in the lower jaw. Reaches a maximum length of 12 cm.

Social Behavior: Lively and curious. Spends much of its time hovering in midwater searching for zooplankton, retreating to the rockwork only to sleep or when threatened.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Uniform bright canary-yellow coloration across the entire body, head, and fins. Caudal fin features long lyre-shaped outer lobes. Adult males have longer caudal filaments.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Demands a tank of at least 115 liters with numerous rocky crevices. A tight-fitting lid is required to prevent jumps.

Diet and Feeding: Planctivorous omnivore. Feed small frozen foods (brine shrimp, mysis, copepods) and fine dry pellets. Include vegetable-based foods for vitamin enrichment.

Water Quality: Keep parameters stable. Temperature 22-27°C, pH 8.0-8.4, salinity SG 1.020-1.026. GH 15-25. Moderate water movement is beneficial.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: 100% reef safe, excellent for coral reef aquariums. Its fangs protect it from larger predators. Keep singly to prevent territorial aggression.

Aquarium Breeding: Successfully bred in captivity. Adhesive eggs are laid in rocky crevices and guarded by the male until hatching.

Risks and Diseases: Very hardy. High risk of jumping if the tank is uncovered. Bites are painful to humans; handle with care during maintenance.
