Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widespread in the tropical Indo-Pacific: from East African coasts to Fiji, Samoa, and the Ryukyu Islands. Inhabits shallow protected lagoons and seaward reef slopes down to 30 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Blenniidae, genus Meiacanthus. Equipped with venom glands at the base of large hollow canine teeth in the lower jaw, used solely for defense. Reaches up to 11 cm.

Social Behavior: Unlike most blennies, it is an active open-water swimmer, often hovering suspended in midwater. Generally peaceful toward other reef fish.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body is pastel blue or greenish-blue in the anterior half, transitioning sharply into bright lemon-yellow on the posterior half and lyrate tail. A dark stripe is present above the eye.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Demands an aquarium of at least 115 liters. Provide rockwork with caves, alongside open swimming areas in midwater. A tight lid is mandatory to prevent jumps.

Diet and Feeding: Zooplanktivorous omnivore. Readily accepts mysis, brine shrimp, copepods, and small marine pellets. Include vegetable matter in the diet.

Water Quality: Typical marine parameters. Temperature 23-28°C, pH 8.0-8.5, salinity SG 1.020-1.026. GH 15-25. Prefers gentle to moderate water movement.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: 100% reef safe. Does not harm corals or ornamental shrimps. Avoid highly aggressive tankmates, though its venomous fangs deter most predators from swallowing it.

Aquarium Breeding: Successfully bred in commercial aquaculture. Spawns eggs in cave nests which the male guards until hatching.

Risks and Diseases: Very hardy and disease-resistant. The main risk is jumping from uncovered tanks. Handle with care during maintenance to avoid painful fangs bites.
