Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Western Pacific: from southern Japan to the Great Barrier Reef, New Caledonia, and Fiji. Inhabits coral-rich lagoons and seaward reefs down to 30 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Blenniidae, genus Plagiotremus. Features a highly tapered, hydrodynamic body and a subterminal mouth equipped with sharp teeth designed to nip skin. Grows to 8 cm.

Social Behavior: Famous for Batesian mimicry. Mimics the appearance of the peaceful and non-toxic Meiacanthus atrodorsalis to deceive surgeonfish or angelfish, allowing it to approach and deliver rapid bites.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Iridescent light blue body with a bright yellow tail, identical to Meiacanthus atrodorsalis. A dark stripe runs along the dorsal fin. Dimorphism is absent.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 150 liters with abundant rocky hiding places. A tight-fitting lid is essential as it is an active swimmer prone to jumping.

Diet and Feeding: Specialized carnivore. In the wild, feeds on scales, mucus, and skin of healthy fish. In captivity, must be trained to accept frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and finely minced shellfish fed frequently.

Water Quality: Keep marine parameters stable. Temperature 25-28°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity SG 1.020-1.026. GH 15-25. An efficient protein skimmer is recommended.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Highly problematic. While coral safe, it constantly harasses other fish by nipping at them. Should be kept singly or only with large, fast-moving species.

Aquarium Breeding: Undocumented in captivity due to its parasitic behavior and specialized larval feeding requirements.

Risks and Diseases: The main risk is the lethal stress it inflicts on other tankmates. Highly sensitive to marine ich (Cryptocaryon) when stressed.

Compatibility & tankmates
Non Reef Safe in senso stretto poiché, pur ignorando i coralli, stressa o ferisce gli altri pesci. Evitare la convivenza con pesci lenti.
