Species description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Indo-West Pacific, ranging from Sri Lanka and Indonesia to Australia, New Guinea, and the Ryukyu Islands. Lives on shallow coral reefs and rubble-strewn lagoons at depths of 1 to 15 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Part of the Blenniidae family, genus Ecsenius. Features an elongated, scaleless body with large mobile eyes on top of the head. Grows to about 6 cm (2.4 inches).

Social Behavior: Peaceful and comical. Perches on rocks using its pelvic fins to observe its surroundings. Territorial only toward conspecifics or similarly shaped blennies in small aquariums.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body displays a cryptic marbled white, grey, and black pattern on the front half, fading to yellow near the tail. Minimal sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Minimum tank size of 100 liters (25 gallons) with plenty of matured live rock. Provide crevices and holes for perching. A secure lid is recommended.

Diet and Feeding: Herbivorous grazer. Feeds on microalgae and detritus from rockwork. Supplement with spirulina flakes, nori sheets, and herbivore pellets if natural algae is low.

Water Quality: Maintain standard reef parameters: temperature 25-28°C (77-82°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.024-1.026, and KH 8-12. Sensitive to rapid salinity changes.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Reef-safe. Excellent with clownfish, gobies, cardinfish, and peaceful wrasses. May nip at SPS coral polyps if underfed.

Aquarium Reproduction: Possible. Males guard adhesive eggs deposited inside small pipes or rock crevices. Rearing larvae requires rotifers and specialized setups.

Risks and Diseases: Generally very hardy. Main risk is starvation if introduced to a tank without algae, or jumping through open aquariums.
