Species description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Widespread in the Western Pacific, from Indonesia and the Philippines to the Great Barrier Reef and the Solomon Islands. Inhabits coral-rich slopes and rubble zones in lagoons and seaward reefs at depths of 2 to 35 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Part of the genus Chrysiptera. Small species, growing to a maximum length of 6 cm (2.4 inches). Oval, compact body.
Social Behavior: Semi-aggressive. Known as one of the least aggressive and most passive damselfishes in the hobby. Defines a small territory close to the rocks.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Displays a unique pattern: a bright electric blue head and forebody, a pinkish to yellow body, and a bright yellow belly. A prominent black spot is present at the rear base of the dorsal fin. No obvious sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 100 liters with plenty of live rock to provide small caves and crevices. Sturdy and easy to maintain in any reef setup.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Readily consumes frozen foods (brine shrimp, mysis), high-quality small pellets, flakes, and dried marine algae.
Water Quality: Very hardy and adaptable. Keep parameters in typical reef ranges: temperature 24-27°C (75-81°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, GH 15-25, and KH 8-12.
Compatibility and Tankmates: 100% reef-safe. Compatible with similar-sized or larger fish. Best introduced in the middle to late stocking phase of a community tank.
Aquarium Reproduction: Feasible. Adhesive eggs are deposited on a hard substrate in a cave and are guarded by the male. Rearing fry is challenging.
Risks and Diseases: Very disease-resistant. Risks are minimal, mostly related to territorial disputes if kept in overcrowded setups.
