Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Western Pacific: Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia, and northern Australia. Found in shallow surge zones of outer reefs from 1 to 20 meters deep.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Pomacentridae. Oval, laterally compressed body. Reaches a maximum length of 7.0 cm.
Social Behavior: Semi-aggressive. Less territorial than most other damselfishes. Spends its time swimming near rock shelters, individually or in loose groups.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Bicolored pattern: head and upper back are brilliant electric metallic blue, while the lower body is orange-yellow to pinkish. No sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Demands a tank of at least 80 liters with plenty of rockwork to establish territories. Moderate water flow.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Feeds on algae and zooplankton. Accepts flakes, pellets, frozen artemia, and mysis. Feed twice daily.
Water Quality: Keep reef parameters stable: temperature 23-27 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity SG 1.020-1.025. Standard filtration.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Best kept with other semi-aggressive species. May show territoriality to newly introduced fish. Completely reef safe.
Aquarium Breeding: Spawns in caves. The male guards and fans the adhesive eggs until hatching. Larvae are very small.
Risks and Diseases: Very hardy. High resistance to typical marine diseases, but can become aggressive if kept in small setups.
