Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Distributed across the Indo-Pacific, from Cocos-Keeling Islands to the Line Islands, north to southern Japan, and throughout the Great Barrier Reef. Found in shallow lagoons.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Pomacentridae. Features a slightly elongated, compressed body. Reaches a maximum standard length of 9 cm. Distinctive sleek dorsal profile.

Social Behavior: Highly active and energetic species. Exhibits strong territorial behaviors, defending rocky crevices and caves against conspecifics and similar-looking intruders.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Bright, metallic neon-blue body coloration. Caudal and anal fins are marked with a soft yellow tone. No distinct external sexual dimorphism is present.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a minimum tank volume of 100 liters with plenty of rockwork to allow the fish to establish distinct territories and retreat zones.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous diet. Provide high-quality small flakes, pellets, frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and preparations containing marine algae.

Water Quality: Stable reef water quality: temperature 24-28 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity range of 1.020-1.025 with moderate filtration.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Best kept with active, robust reef tankmates. Avoid housing with shy, slow-moving, or long-finned species that may get harassed.

Aquarium Breeding: Oviparous. Spawns adhesive eggs on rocky surfaces or inside crevices. The male guards the nest and fans the clutch until hatching.

Risks and Diseases: Exceptionally hardy species, resistant to typical marine diseases. Highly suitable for beginner aquarists starting a saltwater system.
