Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Western Indo-Pacific, ranging from the Ryukyu Islands to the Great Barrier Reef, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia. Inhabits coral-rich outer reef slopes and lagoons down to 25 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the Pomacentridae family, subfamily Pomacentrinae. The genus Neoglyphidodon is characterized by significant ontogenetic color shifts from juvenile to adult stages.
Social Behavior: Solitary and territorial as adults. Juveniles are more social and timid, sheltering within coral branches. Adults defend a home range aggressively against all intruders.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Juveniles display a brilliant golden-yellow body with two prominent horizontal black stripes running from snout to tail. Adults fade to a solid, dark blackish-brown.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires an aquarium of at least 150 liters with plenty of live rock arranged to create deep caves, tunnels, and visual barriers to help diffuse aggression.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Feeds on benthic algae and zooplankton in nature. Accepts high-quality pellets, flakes, frozen brine shrimp, mysis, and spirulina-based foods.
Water Quality: Standard marine parameters: temperature 23-28 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.020-1.025 with efficient filtration and moderate water movement.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Aggressive. Adults become territorial and hostile, particularly towards conspecifics or similar-looking species. House with large, robust, and active tankmates.
Aquarium Breeding: Oviparous. The male prepares a nesting site on a hard rock surface, courts the female to deposit adhesive eggs, and guards the nest fiercely until hatching.
Risks and Diseases: Extremely hardy and disease-resistant. The main risk is managing its territorial behavior, which can be problematic in small or poorly decorated aquariums.
