Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Western Central Pacific Ocean, commonly found in Indonesia, Philippines, Micronesia, to Samoa, and south to the Great Barrier Reef. Inhabits outer reef slopes and lagoons with rich coral growth.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Classified under the family Pomacentridae, subfamily Pomacentrinae. The specific name refers to the distinctive ocellus pattern on the posterior dorsal fin.
Social Behavior: Highly territorial and solitary species. Stays close to the substrate, actively defending small rocky crevices against other herbivorous or food competitors.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Distinctive yellow-orange coloration on the head and upper body, shading into purplish-blue posteriorly. Features a prominent black ocellus ringed in neon-blue on the soft dorsal fin.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 100 liters with plenty of live rock arranged to form narrow crevices, caves, and shelter sites where the fish can establish a territory.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Feeds on algae and microinvertebrates in the wild. Accepts dry flakes, pellets, frozen brine shrimp, mysis, and seaweed-based preparations.
Water Quality: Standard marine parameters: temperature 23-28 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.020-1.025 with efficient filtration and moderate water movement.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Semi-aggressive. Territorial toward similar-looking species or other damselfishes. Best housed with robust and active tankmates. Avoid very small or timid fish.
Aquarium Breeding: Oviparous. The male clears a hard rock surface, courts the female to spawn, and subsequently guards and fans the adhesive eggs until they hatch.
Risks and Diseases: Very hardy and highly tolerant of standard aquarium conditions. The main issue is managing its territorial behavior in small or poorly decorated tanks.
