Species description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Native to the Western tropical Pacific, predominantly around Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Solomon Islands. Closely associated with branching corals (like Acropora) in sheltered lagoons at depths of 1 to 15 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the genus Chrysiptera. Reaches a maximum size of 7 cm (2.8 inches). Features a compressed oval body shape.

Social Behavior: Semi-aggressive. Strongly defends its selected coral head or rock crevice but is generally much more tolerant of tankmates than other damselfishes.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Distinctly bi-colored: the head and upper body are brilliant electric blue, while the lower belly, anal, and caudal fins are bright golden yellow. No obvious external sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Needs at least 100 liters of volume with plenty of live rock or branching corals to provide territories and hiding places. Easy to keep in any standard reef setup.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Readily accepts frozen brine shrimp, mysis, flake foods, dried algae, and small pellets. Feed 1-2 times daily.

Water Quality: Highly adaptable and hardy. Ideal for biological cycling of new setups. Temperature 24-27°C (75-81°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, GH 15-25, and KH 8-12.

Compatibility and Tankmates: 100% reef-safe. May exhibit territorial behavior towards new or similarly colored passive tankmates. Best introduced last in community aquariums.

Aquarium Reproduction: Feasible. Females deposit adhesive eggs on rocks, which are then guarded and aerated by the male. Larval rearing is difficult due to their tiny size.

Risks and Diseases: Extremely hardy and disease-resistant. Most issues arise from territorial squabbles if the tank is crowded or lacks sufficient rock crevices.
