Species description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Widespread in the Western Indo-Pacific, from the Philippines and Indonesia to Vanuatu and northern Australia. Inhabits shallow sandy lagoons and protected reefs down to 10 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the genus Chrysiptera. Features a sturdy, laterally compressed body, growing to a maximum size of 8.5 cm (3.3 inches).

Social Behavior: Aggressive and highly territorial. Males vigorously defend a rocky territory from any fish that approaches, regardless of its size.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Males are solid bright sapphire blue, sometimes featuring a yellow or orange tail. Females are blue with translucent fins and a small black spot on the back of the dorsal fin.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 150 liters to disperse aggression. Abundant live rock is essential to create visual barriers and distinct territories.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Feeds on algae and zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, eagerly consumes mysis, brine shrimp, pellets, flakes, and algae-based foods.

Water Quality: Exceptionally hardy and tolerant of poor water conditions. Standard parameters: temperature 24-27°C (75-81°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, GH 15-25, and KH 8-12.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Reef-safe with corals. However, it will terrorize peaceful or passive fish. House with robust tankmates like tangs, dottybacks, or dwarf angelfish.

Aquarium Reproduction: Common. The male courts the female into a rocky crevice to deposit adhesive eggs, which the male then guards fiercely until they hatch.

Risks and Diseases: Highly resistant to most common marine diseases. The main risk is severe physical stress or injury inflicted on passive tankmates.
