Species description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Found in the Southwestern Pacific, specifically Cook, Austral, Tonga, and Samoa islands. Prefers deep outer reef slopes, rocky drop-offs, and channels at depths of 10 to 35 meters, staying close to small crevices.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Pomacentridae, genus Chrysiptera. Features an oval, laterally compressed body. Adults reach a maximum length of approximately 7 cm.
Social Behavior: Semi-aggressive and territorial, but relatively mild compared to common damselfishes. Each individual selects a rock crevice that it defends moderately. Diurnal.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Solid, intense golden-yellow or canary-yellow coloration throughout the body. Lacks black or blue markings. No obvious sexual dimorphism exists between males and females.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires an aquarium of at least 120 liters. Provide plenty of live rock arranged to create caves, crevices, and shaded overhangs to mimic its deep-water environment. Reef Safe.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Readily accepts pellets, flakes, and frozen foods like copepods, brine shrimp, and mysis. Offer algae-based foods for dietary variety. Feed twice daily.
Water Quality: Highly tolerant and hardy. Ideal parameters: temperature 23-28°C, pH 8.0-8.5, specific gravity (SG) 1.022-1.026, GH 15-25, KH 8-12. Moderate water flow is preferred.
Compatibility and Tankmates: 100% reef safe. Perfect for reef tanks. Coexists peacefully with other docile or semi-aggressive reef fish. Avoid housing with large, highly aggressive competitors.
Aquarium Reproduction: Oviparous. Adhesive demersal eggs are laid in crevices and guarded by the male until hatching. Captive reproduction is undocumented.
Risks and Diseases: Exceptionally hardy species that rarely falls ill. May show moderate territorial aggression toward blennies and other Pomacentrids introduced later.
