Species description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Western Indo-Pacific, from the South China Sea to northern Australia, New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. Inhabits silty, sandy lagoons and seagrass beds.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Genus Amphiprion, family Pomacentridae. Oval and laterally compressed dark body. Displays three white bars, with the central bar forming a distinctive saddle-like pattern.

Social Behavior: Associated with sand anemones such as Stichodactyla haddoni and Heteractis crispa. Lives in stable monogamous pairs and actively defends its host.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Dark brown or black body color with a yellow-orange snout. The three vertical white bars vary in extension. Females are significantly larger and darker than males.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires an aquarium of at least 120 liters with an open sandy area and live rock. A carpet anemone (Stichodactyla haddoni) is highly recommended for natural behavior.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet consisting of mysis, brine shrimp, high-quality pellets enriched with marine algae, and fresh seaweed.

Water Quality: Stable temperature between 23°C and 27°C, pH between 8.0 and 8.5, salinity 1.020-1.025, KH 8-12, GH 15-25.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Semi-aggressive. Can become highly protective and territorial against tankmates coming too close to its host. Avoid keeping other clownfish species.

Aquarium Reproduction: Protandrous hermaphrodite. Lays eggs on smooth surfaces near the base of the anemone. The male guards and fans the nest constantly.

Risks and Diseases: Susceptible to skin parasites like Brooklynella hostilis and Cryptocaryon irritans (marine ich). Maintain high water quality.
