Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the coastal waters of Oman in the Northwestern Indian Ocean. This area experiences seasonal upwelling, leading to cooler water conditions.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Pomacentridae. Features a robust, compressed body shape. Reaches a maximum length of 14 cm. Possesses a unique lyre-shaped caudal fin.
Social Behavior: Highly territorial species. Lives in symbiotic association with large sea anemones like Heteractis magnifica and Stichodactyla mertensii in coastal reefs.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Dark brown to blackish base color with two vertical white bars (one on head, one on mid-body). Caudal fin is pale or dark. Females are much larger than males.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a minimum tank size of 250 liters with robust rockwork. Prefers cooler marine temperatures (22-26 °C) due to its native upwelling habitat.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet of frozen foods (mysis, brine shrimp, krill), high-quality dry foods, and marine algae formulations.
Water Quality: Maintain strict water parameters: temperature range 22-26 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity between 1.020 and 1.025 with strong filtration.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Very territorial and aggressive toward other clownfish. Best housed with large, active, and robust fish that can tolerate its protective nature.
Aquarium Breeding: Oviparous, protandrous hermaphrodite. Spawns adhesive eggs on rocky surfaces near the host anemone. The male guards and aerates the nest.
Risks and Diseases: Susceptible to marine parasites if stressed by elevated temperatures. Keeping water temperatures stable and cool is critical for health.
