Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Atoll. Inhabits sheltered seaward reefs, rocky shorelines, and surge zones at depths from 1 to 20 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Classified within the family Pomacentridae, subfamily Pomacentrinae. Closely related to other Abudefduf species but displays a larger adult size and distinct morphology.

Social Behavior: Juveniles form large schools in tide pools and shallow waters. Adults establish territories, becoming highly aggressive, particularly when defending their nesting sites.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Pale bluish-grey body with golden-yellow highlights on the flanks. Marked by five bold vertical black stripes. Spawning males develop a bright purple-blue coloration.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a large marine aquarium of at least 300 liters to support its active swimming and size. Arrange stable rockwork to leave ample open water for movement.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Feeds on zooplankton, macroalgae, and small invertebrates in the wild. Accepts frozen brine shrimp, mysis, dry pellets, and spirulina flakes.

Water Quality: Standard marine parameters: temperature 22-27 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.020-1.025 with efficient filtration and strong water flow.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Highly aggressive. Not suitable for peaceful community reef tanks. Keep with large, robust species such as tangs, triggers, and large wrasses.

Aquarium Breeding: Oviparous. The male clears a nesting area on a hard substrate, courts the female to spawn, and guards the adhesive eggs until they hatch, fanning them constant.

Risks and Diseases: Exceptionally hardy and resilient. Disease-resistant in home aquariums. The main risk is the aggressive harassment of smaller tankmates.
