Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Tropical Atlantic Ocean, ranging from Florida and the Gulf of Mexico to Venezuela, and along the West African coast. Inhabits shallow rocky reefs exposed to strong wave action.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Pomacentridae, subfamily Pomacentrinae. Represents the maximum size limit for the genus, characterized by a deep, powerful body shape.
Social Behavior: Solitary as adults, highly territorial and intolerant of intruders. Settles in intertidal surge zones, aggressively defending rocky shelters.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Dull greyish-brown to olive-green body color. Features five or six broad, vertical dark bars on the sides that fade with age. Fins are dark-edged.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a very large aquarium of at least 400 liters with robust filtration and strong water flow to mimic surge zones. Ensure rockwork is stable.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Feeds on benthic algae, small invertebrates, and zooplankton. In captivity, accepts flakes, pellets, frozen brine shrimp, mysis, and nori sheets.
Water Quality: Standard marine parameters: temperature 22-27 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.020-1.025 with strong filtration, skimmer, and high oxygenation.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Highly aggressive. Hostile toward other damselfishes and smaller species. House only with large, active tankmates like surgeonfish, triggers, and groupers.
Aquarium Breeding: Oviparous. Spawning occurs on flat rocks. The male courts the female, fertilizes the eggs, and guards the nest with extreme aggression until hatching.
Risks and Diseases: Extremely hardy and resilient to common diseases. The primary concern is the physical injury it can inflict on other fish in the tank.
