Brown Chromis

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed in the tropical Atlantic Ocean, from Florida to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and the coast of West Africa. Inhabits steep reef slopes.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Pomacentridae. Features a slender, streamlined body. Reaches a maximum standard length of 15 cm, making it one of the largest Chromis species.

Social Behavior: Extremely peaceful, schooling species. Forms large aggregations that swim well above the reefs to feed on zooplankton, quickly seeking shelter when alarmed.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Silvery grey-brown base color. Distinctive bright yellow spot located at the posterior base of the dorsal fin, and a prominent dark spot at the base of the pectoral fin.

Aquarium Setup: Requires a spacious aquarium of at least 250 liters with extensive open areas for active schooling and swimming.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Feeds on zooplankton in the wild. Accepts high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and chopped seafood.

Water Quality: Maintain standard reef conditions: temperature 22-27 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.020-1.025 with strong water flow to support schooling activity.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Highly compatible with reef-safe fishes. Must be kept in a group of at least 6 individuals to prevent isolation stress and encourage schooling.

Aquarium Breeding: Oviparous. Spawns adhesive eggs on rocky surfaces or macroalgae. The male actively guards and aerates the nest site until hatching.

Risks and Diseases: Very hardy and active species, resilient against common marine diseases. Highly recommended for marine community tanks.
