Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the tropical western Atlantic, inhabiting coral reefs and protected rocky crevices, often sheltering in shallow waters.

Taxonomy: Classified in the Stenopodidae family. It features a spiny body surface, large banded claws, and long white sensory antennae.

Social Behavior: Highly territorial and aggressive toward other shrimps, especially of the same species. Usually kept singly or as mated pairs.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body is a striking bright yellow, with large front claws banded in red and white. Females are larger and carry blue-colored egg masses.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Tank Setup: Needs a tank of at least 15 gallons with plenty of live rock caves. They like to hang upside down from cave ceilings.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous scavenger. Acts as a cleaner shrimp, consuming fish parasites and organic waste. Will eat frozen mysis and pellets.

Water Quality: Demands stable marine parameters: pH 8.1-8.4, temperature 22-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, and zero tolerance for copper medications.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Safe with corals and larger fish. It may prey on smaller ornamental shrimps or crabs in a restricted environment.

Aquarium Breeding: Mated pairs spawn frequently. The female carries blue eggs under her tail. Rearing the larvae is extremely challenging.

Risks and Diseases: Claws can break off due to stress or fighting, though they regenerate during subsequent molts. Highly sensitive to copper.
