Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the western Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, inhabiting shallow coral reefs, rocky jetties, and seagrass beds.

Taxonomy: Part of the Lysmatidae family. It features a semi-translucent body with fine walking legs and delicate antennae.

Social Behavior: Peaceful, shy, and mostly nocturnal. It prefers to remain hidden under rocks during the day and emerges at night to scavenge for food.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body is translucent pinkish-red with thin red stripes running along its segments. They are simultaneous hermaphrodites.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Tank Setup: A tank of at least 10 gallons with ample live rock work containing crevices is ideal to make them feel safe and comfortable.

Diet and Feeding: Opportunistic omnivore. Highly regarded for consuming pest Aiptasia anemones. Also eats organic debris, flakes, and frozen foods.

Water Quality: Demands standard marine water quality: pH 8.1-8.4, temperature 22-28°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, and strict zero copper policy.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Reef safe, but hungry specimens might nip at soft corals or zoanthids. Do not keep with predatory fish like wrasses or puffers.

Aquarium Breeding: Mating occurs regularly in pairs, resulting in green eggs. Larvae hatch at night but require specialized rearing to survive.

Risks and Diseases: Potential nipping of corals if food is scarce. Prone to death from sudden changes in salinity and toxicity from copper-based drugs.
