Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the Mediterranean Sea and eastern Atlantic, inhabiting dark rocky caves, crevices, and seagrass meadows.
Taxonomy: Classified within the Lysmatidae family. It features a slender body, long reddish antennae, and fine walking legs.
Social Behavior: Peaceful and gregarious. They enjoy being kept in small groups and are primarily active at night, scavenging for food among rocks.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Patterned with distinct red and orange longitudinal stripes on a translucent body. They are simultaneous hermaphrodites.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Tank Setup: Needs an aquarium with plenty of caves and overhangs. Can adapt to cooler temperate tanks better than tropical Lysmata species.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous scavenger. Famous for consuming pest Aiptasia anemones. It also eats flakes, pellets, and frozen foods like mysis and brine shrimp.
Water Quality: Prefers cooler water temperatures (15-25°C), stable pH (8.1-8.4), salinity around 1.024-1.026, and very low nitrate levels.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Safe with corals and peaceful fish. Do not house with large predatory fish like wrasses or groupers that would eat them.
Aquarium Breeding: They mate easily in captivity. Planktonic larvae are released after hatching but raising them requires specialized food and tanks.
Risks and Diseases: Highly vulnerable during molting. Iodine deficiency can cause molting issues, and copper treatments are highly lethal.
