Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Southwest Pacific: restricted to the coral reefs of Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa. Inhabits sheltered lagoons and inner reef channels down to 20 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Blenniidae. Like other Meiacanthus species, it possesses venom glands associated with its lower canine fangs. Reaches approximately 10 cm.

Social Behavior: Active swimmer. Frequently hovers in midwater, swimming with fluid movements, unlike typical bottom-dwelling blennies.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Stunning dark, almost black body contrasted by a bright golden-yellow dorsal fin and a lyre caudal fin with green or yellow hues. Sexual dimorphism is not evident.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Demands a tank of at least 115 liters with abundant live rock but also open swimming space. A secure, tight lid is mandatory as the species is a skilled jumper.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivore. Readily accepts frozen brine shrimp, mysis, calanus, and dry pellet foods enriched with vegetable matter. Feed twice daily.

Water Quality: Keep marine parameters highly stable. Temperature 24-28°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity SG 1.020-1.026. GH 15-25. Regular protein skimming is recommended.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: 100% reef safe. An excellent tankmate for peaceful reef setups. May display territorial aggression toward other blennies. Keep singly.

Aquarium Breeding: Spawning has been achieved in commercial aquaculture. Spawns adhesive eggs in small caves which are guarded by the male.

Risks and Diseases: Hardy species. The main danger is jumping from uncovered aquariums. Fang bites are painful; exercise caution during tank maintenance.
