Species description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Endemic to the Fiji Islands in the Southwest Pacific Ocean. Inhabits sheltered coral reefs, lagoons, and outer reefs at depths of 1 to 15 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Tiny species belonging to the family Blenniidae. Grows to a maximum length of only 4 cm. Features protruding mobile eyes and a cylindrical body.
Social Behavior: Peaceful and active. Spends its day perching on live rock or hard corals, keeping a watchful eye on its surroundings.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Features a distinct bicolor pattern with a dark grey or black anterior half and a bright orange or yellow posterior half. No distinct sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 60 liters (perfect for nano-reefs). Provide ample live rock with tiny crevice refuges. A secure lid is essential.
Diet and Feeding: Herbivorous. Constantly grazes on rock surfaces for microalgae and diatoms. Supplement with spirulina flakes and finely chopped dried seaweed.
Water Quality: Maintain stable water parameters. Temperature 23-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity SG 1.020-1.026. GH 15-25. Conduct regular partial water changes.
Compatibility and Tankmates: 100% reef safe. Ideal tankmate for small peaceful species like gobies. Avoid keeping with aggressive or large territorial fish.
Aquarium Reproduction: Very rare in home aquariums due to the tiny size of the offspring. Spawns adhesive eggs guarded by the male.
Risks and Diseases: Starvation in newly established or sterile aquariums. Highly sensitive to copper treatments and poor filtration.
