Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Western Central Pacific, including Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Inhabits shallow seaward reefs and rubble zones at depths of 0 to 5 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Part of the Blenniidae family, genus Salarias. Features a cylindrical, scaleless body with large mobile eyes on top of its head. Reaches 5.5 cm (2.2 inches) in length.

Social Behavior: Peaceful and comical. Spends all day hopping between rocks and scraping film algae. Shows territorial behavior toward conspecifics.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Cryptic brown-green and cream mottled body with irregular vertical bands for camouflage. Minimal sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Minimum tank size of 100 liters (25 gallons) with plenty of matured live rock and natural algae. A tight-fitting lid is essential to prevent jumping.

Diet and Feeding: Strictly herbivorous. Feeds on film algae and detritus. Supplement with nori sheets, spirulina-based flakes, and herbivore pellets.

Water Quality: Maintain standard marine parameters: temperature 22-26°C (72-78°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, and KH 8-12. Regular maintenance is necessary.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Reef-safe. Ideal with clownfish, gobies, and small wrasses. Avoid housing with aggressive blennies.

Aquarium Breeding: Extremely difficult. Eggs are deposited inside small caves and guarded by the male. Rearing larvae is difficult in home aquaria.

Risks and Diseases: Starvation is the main risk if kept in tanks without sufficient algae. High risk of jumping out of uncovered aquariums.
