Species description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Reported in historical records from the eastern Mediterranean or as an unvalidated taxon of the genus Ecsenius. Inhabits shallow rocky coastal waters subject to wave action.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Historically listed under the Blenniidae family. Features an elongated scaleless body, protruding eyes adapted for reef surveillance, and a subterminal mouth.

Social Behavior: Benthic and territorial. spends its time patrolling the bottom and live rocks for algae biofilm, defending its favorite crevices.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Cryptic camouflage with brown and grey stripes or spots designed to blend into rocky substrates and coralline algae. Sexual dimorphism is not prominent.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 100 liters with plenty of live rock and caves. A tight-fitting lid is necessary to prevent jumps.

Diet and Feeding: Herbivorous. Demands benthic algae to graze on. Supplement with spirulina-based foods, dried nori sheets, and high-quality herbivore foods.

Water Quality: Prefers subtropical/Mediterranean-like water temperatures of 20°C to 26°C. pH stable at 8.1-8.4, salinity SG 1.020-1.026. GH 15-25.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Reef Safe. Does not harm corals or invertebrates. Avoid keeping with aggressive competitors for bottom space.

Aquarium Reproduction: Undocumented in captivity. Expected to lay adhesive benthic eggs inside protected cavities guarded by the male.

Risks and Diseases: Sensitive to overheating (above 28°C) and prone to marine ich (Cryptocaryon) if stressed by poor water quality or aggressive tankmates.
