Species description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Endemic to the Red Sea, particularly the Gulf of Aqaba. Inhabits shallow coral reefs, rocky crevices, and algal flats at depths of 1 to 15 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belonging to the family Blenniidae, genus Ecsenius. Reaches up to 5.5 cm (2.2 inches) in length. Standard elongated combtooth blenny shape without scales.
Social Behavior: Peaceful, inquisitive, and vigilant. Spends its day perching on live rock and grazing on algae. Aggressive toward conspecifics in small tanks.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Dark brownish-olive body fading to a pale cream or yellowish belly, with orange-ringed eyes. No visible sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Best suited for nano-reef tanks of at least 100 liters (25 gallons) with plenty of matured live rock. Secure lid required to prevent jumping.
Diet and Feeding: Herbivorous. Consumes microalgae and detritus. Supplement with high-quality spirulina flakes, nori sheets, and herbivore-specific pellets.
Water Quality: Stable parameters: temperature 22-26°C (72-78°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, and KH 8-12. Regular maintenance needed.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Reef-safe. Excellent with clownfish, gobies, and small wrasses. Will not harm ornamental shrimp or corals.
Aquarium Reproduction: Very rare in captivity. Spawning occurs in caves, where the male guards the adhesive eggs until hatching.
Risks and Diseases: Very hardy, but prone to starvation in sterile or newly set up tanks. Keep aquarium covered as they are prone to jump.
