Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Indo-Western Pacific, from Taiwan to Indonesia, Philippines, and northern Australia. Inhabits shallow, coral-rich lagoons and sandy bays at depths of up to 15 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Belonging to the family Labridae, genus Halichoeres. Reaches up to 19 cm (7.5 inches) in length. Body is elongated with a slightly pointed snout and small projecting teeth.

Social Behavior: Bold and energetic. Spends the day swimming and searching for benthic prey. Buries itself instantly in the sand bed to sleep at night or when alarmed.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body displays horizontal green-yellow lines on a blue-purple background. Head has complex orange/pink lines. Terminal males are larger and more brightly colored.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Minimum aquarium size of 300 liters (80 gallons) to accommodate its active swimming behavior. A deep sand bed of fine substrate (5-7 cm) is mandatory. Secure lid required.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Naturally feeds on small mollusks and worms. In captivity, feed mysis, brine shrimp, krill, and high-quality pellets. Helps control flatworms and bristleworms.

Water Quality: Keep standard marine parameters: temperature 22-26°C (72-78°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, and KH 8-12. Needs well-oxygenated water.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Safe with corals, but not reef-safe with small crustaceans (like sexy shrimp) or feather dusters. Best kept with active fish like tangs and angels.

Aquarium Breeding: Spawning is not commonly achieved in home aquaria. They exhibit group pelagic spawning on reefs in the wild.

Risks and Diseases: Mouth injuries can occur if the substrate contains sharp gravel or crushed coral. Susceptible to bacterial skin infections if stressed.
