Species description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Widespread in the Western Atlantic Ocean, from Florida and Bermuda to southern Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean reefs. Inhabits shallow coral reefs from 1 to 30 meters deep.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the family Labridae, subfamily Bodianinae (hogfishes). Features a pointed, elongated snout with strong canine teeth. Can reach a maximum length of 40 cm (16 inches).

Social Behavior: Highly active and strong swimmer. Juveniles sometimes act as cleaner fish. Adults are solitary and territorial towards other large wrasses.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Features a distinctive bi-color scheme: the upper half of the head and anterior body are deep blue-violet, while the lower body and tail are bright golden yellow. No distinct sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a very large aquarium of at least 750 liters to accommodate its adult size and active swimming. Needs sturdy rockwork and a heavy, secure lid to prevent jumping.

Diet and Feeding: Voracious carnivore. Naturally feeds on crabs, sea urchins, mollusks, and shrimp. Feed meaty foods like krill, clams, chopped fish, shrimp, and large protein pellets.

Water Quality: Demands robust filtration due to high waste production. Temperature 24-27°C (75-81°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.022-1.025, GH 15-25, and KH 8-12.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Not reef-safe with invertebrates. It will eat ornamental shrimp, crabs, hermit crabs, and snails. Safe with corals, but may flip unattached fragments.

Aquarium Reproduction: Unreported in aquaria due to its size and pelagic spawning requirements in open water.

Risks and Diseases: Very hardy and resistant to most common diseases. Main risks include high bioload production and feeding competition with shyer fish.
