Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Red Sea. Endemic to this region, inhabiting sandy and rubble outer reef slopes rich in corals between 15 and 40 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the family Labridae. Reaches about 10 cm. Slender body and rounded caudal fin with short prolonged rays in males.

Social Behavior: Peaceful swimming fish. Males court females by performing sudden accelerations in mid-water, flashing their colors on and off.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Stunning coloration: red-orange body crossed by 8 parallel longitudinal electric-blue or metallic-purple stripes. Obvious dimorphism, males are larger and more colorful.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Tank of at least 150 liters (40 gallons) rich in rocks but with plenty of free space in mid-water to allow characteristic courtship dashes.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivore. Offer mysis, brine shrimp, copepods, and enriched dry foods. Feed regularly to support its high metabolism.

Water Quality: Temperature 22-27°C (72-80°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025. Effective skimming and excellent water oxygenation are required.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: 100% reef-safe. Ideal for community reef aquariums. It is recommended to keep them in a harem with one male and multiple females.

Aquarium Breeding: Reproduction is not successfully documented in home aquariums. In the wild, they release free pelagic eggs.

Risks and Diseases: Jumps frequently out of the water if chased or startled. The tank must be perfectly covered with a fine mesh screen.
