Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the Western Atlantic Ocean, Florida, and the Gulf of Mexico. Commonly found in shallow sandy bottoms and seagrass beds.
Taxonomy: Classified within the Strombidae family. Features a heavy, thick shell with short spines on the whorls and a sickle-shaped operculum.
Social Behavior: Peaceful and solitary. Spends much of its time buried in the sandbed, with only its stalked eyes protruding to monitor surroundings.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The shell ranges in color from light tan to dark brown or gold. Males can be territorial towards other conchs.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Tank Setup: A deep sandy substrate of at least 1-2 inches is required. Avoid placing too much rock directly on the sandbed.
Diet and Feeding: Herbivorous detritivore. Sifts sand to feed on diatoms, organic detritus, and film algae. Supplement with algae wafers if food is scarce.
Water Quality: Standard reef parameters: pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.023-1.025. Extremely sensitive to copper treatments.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Reef-safe. Do not house with shell-crushing predators like puffers, triggerfish, or large hermit crabs.
Aquarium Breeding: Spawning in aquariums is rare. They lay gelatinous egg masses on the sandy substrate.
Risks and Diseases: Highly sensitive to rapid changes in salinity and temperature. Drip acclimation is mandatory.

- Molting
- Non muta (è un gasteropode), ma necessita di carbonato di calcio per accrescere la conchiglia.
- Reproduction
- Ermafrodita insufficiente, la riproduzione in acquario è estremamente rara.
