Tank Setup: Can be housed in mature marine reef or fish-only aquariums of at least 30-50 liters. The tank must contain a good amount of established live rock rich in natural algae and biofilm, which serves as its primary grazing ground. Rocks must be stacked securely as the cowry likes to squeeze into tight crevices. The aquarium must be biologically mature; this species does not do well in newly set up tanks lacking algae growth.
Diet and Feeding: A specialized algae grazing gastropod and efficient cleaner. It feeds primarily on benthic microalgae, diatoms, hair algae, and organic detritus scraped from rocks using its radula. If the aquarium is too clean or lacks natural algae, its diet must be supplemented with dried nori seaweed, spirulina pellets, or high-quality herbivore fish food to prevent starvation.
Water Quality: Requires stable marine parameters: temperature between 24°C and 27°C (75-80°F), stable pH of 8.1-8.4, specific gravity (SG) of 1.023-1.025, and KH of 8-12°dKH. Maintain adequate calcium (400-450 ppm) and magnesium (1300-1350 ppm) levels to support shell growth and maintain shell luster. Nitrates and phosphates should be kept low. It has zero tolerance for copper treatments.
Compatibility and Tankmates: An excellent addition to the Clean Up Crew (CUC). It is fully compatible with corals and peaceful reef fish. Avoid housing with specialized invertebrate predators, such as large puffers, triggerfish, large wrasses, and lobsters. Be cautious with aggressive hermit crabs, which may attack and kill the cowry to steal its smooth shell.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in home aquariums is extremely rare and difficult due to the planktonic larval (veliger) stage. In nature, cowries deposit egg capsules containing thousands of eggs onto hard surfaces, which the female actively guards by covering them with her foot until hatching. The released free-swimming larvae require specialized phytoplankton and flow conditions that are incompatible with standard aquarium filters.
Risks and Diseases: The primary risk is starvation in overly sterile or small tanks. It is extremely sensitive to copper-based medications and high levels of ammonia or nitrite, which are rapidly fatal. Avoid sudden changes in salinity during water changes. If the cowry dies, remove it immediately from the tank to prevent a major ammonia spike.
