Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the western Indo-Pacific, preferring shallow coastal sandy bottoms and protected reef lagoons.
Taxonomy: Classified within the Babyloniidae family. It features a heavy spiral shell and a long, prominent siphonal canal.
Social Behavior: Peaceful and substrate-dwelling. It spends daylight hours buried in the sand, emerging quickly when it senses meaty foods.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Shell has a creamy white background with distinct leopard-like brown spots arranged in rows. No visible sexual differences.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Tank Setup: Needs a tank of at least 20 gallons with a deep, fine sand bed (2-3 inches) to allow burrowing and sand sifting.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous scavenger. It feeds on leftover meaty fish foods, shrimp chunks, and clams. It does not graze on algae.
Water Quality: Demands standard marine conditions: pH 8.1-8.4, temperature 22-28°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, and stable calcium levels.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Safe with corals and fish. Do not house with mollusk-eating predators like large pufferfish or large hermit crabs.
Aquarium Breeding: Spawning is possible, but rearing the planktonic veliger larvae is highly challenging and rarely successful in reef tanks.
Risks and Diseases: Starvation in tanks with insufficient organic matter in the sand. Highly sensitive to copper treatments and salinity shock.
