Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific, from East Africa and the Red Sea to Hawaii and Polynesia. Settles in rocky tide pools, reef flats, and shallow sandy zones.

Taxonomy: Member of the family Diogenidae. Distinguished by an oversized left claw used as a shield to block the shell opening when retracted. Grows to around 3 cm.

Social Behavior: Peaceful and busy. Spends the day grazing algae on live rock. Can be territorial towards other hermit crabs if food or empty shell options are scarce.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Walking legs display bold black-and-white or dark brown-and-white bands (hence zebra). Large left claw is solid white with dark base colors. Eye stalks are orange with blue eyes. No visible dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Tank Setup: Suitable for tanks of 10 gallons or larger. Live rock is essential for climbing and foraging. Provide empty gastropod shells of various sizes for growth.

Diet and Feeding: Herbivore and detritivore. Consumes green hair algae, film algae, and cyanobacteria. Accepts sinking pellets, spirulina tablets, leftover frozen foods, and dried nori.

Water Quality: Stable marine parameters: SG 1.020-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, temperature 22-28°C. Highly sensitive to copper treatments and elevated nitrates.

Compatibility and Tankmates: 100% reef-safe. Perfect Clean-Up Crew (CUC) member. Peaceful with fish and corals. May prey on live snails (like Turbo or Astrea) if suitable empty shells are lacking.

Aquarium Breeding: Very difficult. Fertile eggs hatch into planktonic zoeal larvae that require specialized feeding and are usually removed by standard filtration.

Risks and Diseases: High stress and mortality if suitable replacement shells are unavailable. Highly sensitive to rapid salinity shifts.

Calcium and minerals
Il calcio deve essere presente in livelli ottimali per supportare le mute e la robustezza delle chele calcificate.
Molting
Effettua la muta all'interno della conchiglia. Cerca aree riparate o angoli tranquilli della vasca.
Reproduction
Emette larve planctoniche che non si sviluppano nei comuni acquari a causa del filtraggio meccanico.
Compatibility & tankmates
Generalmente pacifico. Può attaccare lumache vive se scarseggiano conchiglie vuote di dimensioni idonee.
