Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed in the tropical Indo-Pacific, from East Africa to Japan, Australia, and central Pacific islands. Settles on shallow outer reef slopes.

Taxonomy: Member of the family Diogenidae. One of the smallest hermit crabs in the trade, reaching a maximum size of just 1-1.5 cm. Features a smooth, compact body.

Social Behavior: Peaceful, shy, and strongly associated with branching stony corals (such as Acropora, Pocillopora, Stylophora). It remains sheltered within the coral branches.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Distinctive snow-white or pale cream body, with bright orange or red tips on its claws and walking legs. Eyes are bright blue. No visible sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Tank Setup: Suitable for small nano reefs of 5 gallons or larger. Prefers tanks containing branching SPS coral colonies. Tiny empty gastropod shells must be added to allow growth.

Diet and Feeding: Detritivore and herbivore. Feeds on coral mucus, microalgae growing on coral bases, and organic leftovers. Accepts fine sinking pellets and spirulina powder.

Water Quality: Reef parameters. Salinity SG 1.021-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, temperature 22-28°C. Highly sensitive to copper treatments and elevated nitrates.

Compatibility and Tankmates: 100% reef-safe. Perfect for SPS reef tanks. Compatible with peaceful small fish and corals. May be bullied by larger hermit crab species.

Aquarium Breeding: Microscopic larval stages are pelagic and complex, and do not survive standard home aquarium filtration systems.

Risks and Diseases: Low iodine or calcium leading to failed molts. Lack of suitable tiny replacement shells causes high stress. Highly sensitive to copper treatments.

Calcium and minerals
Fornire livelli stabili di calcio per facilitare la muta ed evitare problemi di decalcificazione.
Molting
Effettua la muta all'interno della conchiglia. Cerca aree riparate o angoli tranquilli della vasca.
Reproduction
Rilascia larve planctoniche che non si sviluppano nei comuni acquari a causa del filtraggio meccanico.
Compatibility & tankmates
Generalmente pacifico. Può essere disturbato da paguri di grandi dimensioni.
