Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed in the tropical Indo-Pacific, from East Africa and the Red Sea to Hawaii and Polynesia. Inhabits shallow coral reefs and rocky reef flats.

Taxonomy: Member of the family Diogenidae. Distinguished by a strongly dorso-ventrally flattened body shape, which is an evolutionary adaptation for living inside narrow, slit-like shells (especially Cone shells, Conus). Grows to 5-6 cm.

Social Behavior: Peaceful, secretive, and primarily nocturnal. spends daylight hours wedged into the tightest crevices of live rock. Harmless to corals and peaceful tankmates.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Stunning coloration featuring walking legs and claws ringed with alternating, vivid red and bright orange bands. Eye stalks are bright red with dark cornea. No visible sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Tank Setup: Suitable for tanks of 15-20 gallons or larger. Provide live rock with narrow crevices for day hiding. Empty flattened shells (especially Conus shells) must be supplied.

Diet and Feeding: Herbivore and detritivore. Feeds on green hair algae, film algae, and leftover fish food. Accepts spirulina wafers, sinking pellets, and chopped frozen foods.

Water Quality: Reef parameters. Salinity SG 1.021-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, temperature 22-28°C. Highly sensitive to copper treatments and elevated nitrates.

Compatibility and Tankmates: 100% reef-safe. Peaceful clean-up crew member. May occasionally target live cone-shaped snails if empty flat shells are lacking.

Aquarium Breeding: Microscopic zoeal larvae are pelagic and require open ocean salinity to develop, making aquarium breeding unsuccessful under normal conditions.

Risks and Diseases: Low iodine or calcium leading to failed molts. Lack of suitable replacement Conus-type shells causes high stress. Highly sensitive to copper treatments.

Calcium and minerals
Calcio e carbonati stabili necessari per consentire la corretta calcificazione dell'esoscheletro piatto durante la muta.
Molting
Effettua la muta all'interno della conchiglia in zone riparate. Fornire livelli adeguati di iodio.
Reproduction
