Tank Setup: It can be housed in reef aquariums or nano reefs starting from 30-50 liters. It is important to provide a sandy substrate and an arrangement of live rocks rich in microalgae and detritus. The most critical element for their well-being is the constant availability of empty gastropod shells of various sizes and shapes, allowing them to molt and switch shells as they grow.
Diet and Feeding: It is an excellent omnivorous scavenger and detritivore. It feeds tirelessly on filamentous algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, organic debris, and leftover fish food. Its presence is highly beneficial for keeping the substrate and live rocks clean. If natural food is scarce, sinking pellets for bottom-dwellers or nori algae sheets can be provided.
Water Quality: It prefers stable marine water parameters: temperature of 22-27°C, pH between 8.1 and 8.4, and specific gravity of 1.022-1.025. As with all crustaceans, maintaining adequate levels of calcium, magnesium, and carbonate hardness (KH) is essential to support proper exoskeleton calcification during molting. Copper must be avoided at all costs.
Compatibility and Tankmates: It is completely safe for corals and fish. It coexists peacefully with small reef fish and other invertebrates like snails and shrimp. However, if empty shells are scarce, it may attack live snails (such as Turbo or Astraea) to steal their shells. Avoid keeping them with crustacean predators like hawkfish, puffers, and large wrasses.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in home aquariums is extremely difficult to achieve successfully. Although mating and egg deposition (which the fertilized female carries under her abdomen) occur frequently, the larvae released into the water pass through several delicate planktonic stages (zoea) that are inevitably consumed by fish or removed by filtration systems.
Risks and Diseases: The main risk is related to failed molts (exuviation), often caused by a lack of iodine and trace elements or sudden shifts in salinity. They are highly sensitive to copper-based medications and high levels of ammonia or nitrites, which can be quickly fatal. Ensure new specimens are acclimated slowly before introduction.
