Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Western Atlantic, distributed from North Carolina down to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. Inhabits mud flats and brackish beaches.

Taxonomy: Member of the family Diogenidae. Characterized by short, equal-sized claws and a soft abdomen requiring empty gastropod shells.

Social Behavior: Peaceful toward fish, but opportunistic. Moves constantly across the sandy substrate searching for organic matter and leftovers.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Walking legs show alternating longitudinal stripes of white, orange, and dark greyish-green. Claws are brown or olive green.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Tank Setup: Requires a tank of at least 80 liters with fine sand and live rock. Provide a variety of empty gastropod shells of different sizes.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous scavenger. Voraciously consumes organic waste, hair algae, detritus, and leftovers of frozen or pellet fish foods.

Water Quality: Stable marine or brackish water conditions: temperature 15-28 °C, pH 8.0-8.4, salinity SG 1.018-1.025. Highly tolerant to salinity shifts.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Excellent clean-up crew member. May attack live snails if there is a shortage of suitable empty shells for growth.

Aquarium Breeding: Internal fertilization. Females carry eggs under the abdomen until releasing planktonic larvae that cannot survive in home filtration.

Risks and Diseases: High stress during molting if empty shells are not provided. Extremely sensitive to copper treatments in the aquarium water.
