Species description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Tropical Western Pacific: mainly distributed in northern Borneo (Sabah, Malaysia) and the southern Philippines. Inhabits shallow coastal reefs and coral rubble zones at depths of 1 to 12 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Blenniidae. Diminutive species measuring a maximum of 5 cm in total length. Slender, scaleless body.

Social Behavior: Peaceful and shy. Spends time patrolling rocks near the substrate, retreating into crevices when detecting vibrations or danger.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Light grey or olive body with two parallel oval black spots located on the lower abdomen behind the pectoral fins. No distinct sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Demands an aquarium of at least 80 liters with live rock. A tight-fitting lid is highly recommended as this species is a capable jumper.

Diet and Feeding: Herbivorous. Actively grazes on diatoms and benthic algae. Offer spirulina-based foods and finely shredded nori. Accepts finely minced frozen brine shrimp.

Water Quality: Maintain stable marine parameters. Temperature 22-28°C, pH 8.0-8.5, salinity SG 1.020-1.026. GH 15-25. Protein skimming is recommended.

Compatibility and Tankmates: 100% reef safe. Suitable to live with calm reef fish. Avoid housing with aggressive blennies or predatory fish.

Aquarium Reproduction: Undocumented in captivity. Spawns adhesive eggs in natural cavities guarded by the male.

Risks and Diseases: Starvation in newly set-up or sterile tanks lacking algae biofilm. Sensitive to sudden temperature fluctuations and copper treatments.
