Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Tropical Western Pacific: distributed across the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, and the Ryukyu Islands of southern Japan. Inhabits algae-rich coral reefs and shallow rocky coasts down to 15 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Blenniidae, genus Salarias. Features a scaleless body with prominent branched cirri above the eyes. Reaches approximately 14 cm in total length.
Social Behavior: Highly curious, loves to perch on rocks and corals to observe the tank. Exhibits territorial behavior toward benthic competitors sharing the same feeding niche.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Dark brown or blackish body covered with a myriad of small white and pastel blue spots resembling a starry night sky. Pectoral fins are pale yellow. Dimorphism is not visible.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Demands an aquarium of at least 150 liters with abundant mature live rock rich in algae. A secure lid is mandatory as the species frequently jumps when startled.
Diet and Feeding: Herbivorous. Constantly grazes on rock surfaces. Feed spirulina, nori sheets, and dry vegetable-based foods. Accepts frozen herbivore preparations.
Water Quality: Keep parameters stable and clean. Temperature 22-28°C, pH 8.0-8.5, salinity SG 1.020-1.026. GH 15-25. A robust biological filtration system is recommended.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Reef safe. Excellent ally against green algae in reef tanks. May show aggression toward other blennies or similarly shaped fish. Keep singly.
Aquarium Breeding: Rare in home aquariums. Spawns adhesive eggs in rocky crevices which are defended aggressively by the male.
Risks and Diseases: Starvation in newly set-up or sterile tanks lacking microalgae. Highly sensitive to salinity swings and susceptible to marine ich if stressed.
