Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Western Indian Ocean, distributed from Kenya to Mozambique, including Madagascar and Comoros. Inhabits protected reefs and algae-rich areas at depths of 1 to 20 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Part of the Blenniidae family, genus Meiacanthus. Grows up to 9 cm (3.5 inches). Features venom glands at the base of large canine teeth in the lower jaw.
Social Behavior: Peaceful and semi-pelagic. Unlike most blennies, it spends much of its time swimming in open water. Retreats into caves for sleeping.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Golden-yellow or dark brownish body with black-edged fins and a distinct lyre-shaped caudal fin. Males may have longer tail filaments.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Minimum tank size of 120 liters (30 gallons) with open swimming space and rockwork. A secure, tight-fitting lid is essential as they are known jumpers.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Diet should include fine frozen foods (mysis, brine shrimp), high-quality pellets, and spirulina-based flakes.
Water Quality: Maintain stable marine parameters: temperature 22-27°C (72-81°F), pH 8.1-8.5, specific gravity 1.020-1.026, and KH 8-12. Avoid rapid temperature drops.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Reef-safe. Ideal with peaceful tankmates. Predators learn to avoid them due to their defensive venomous bite.
Aquarium Breeding: Possible in home aquaria. Adhesive eggs are deposited in tubes or shells and guarded by the male until hatching.
Risks and Diseases: Possesses venomous canine teeth; handle with care during maintenance. Otherwise hardy and highly resistant to common skin parasites.
