Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Indo-Pacific, widely distributed from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Gulf of California and Panama. Found in shallow, wave-swept reefs at depths of 1 to 40 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Cirrhitidae. Characterized by thick, thread-like lower pectoral fin rays used to perch. Reaches up to 10 cm in length.

Social Behavior: Ambush predator. Spends its time sitting on top of rockwork or corals, scanning for prey. Highly territorial toward other hawkfish.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body is pinkish-white covered with large, square dark red or brown spots. No obvious external sexual differences.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Minimum tank volume of 120 liters. Needs structures of live rock or sturdy branching corals to provide high perches.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivore. Offer a varied diet of frozen foods including mysis, brine shrimp, chopped krill, and table shrimp. Accepts dry pellets.

Water Quality: Highly adaptable. Maintain standard marine parameters: temperature 22-28°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity SG 1.020-1.025.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Not safe with small ornamental shrimp, crabs, or small fish. Suitable for aquariums with larger, active species.

Aquarium Breeding: Protogynous hermaphrodite. Spawns pelagically at dusk. Larvae are difficult to rear in home aquaria.

Risks and Diseases: Excellent jumper; a tight-fitting mesh or glass lid is mandatory. Robust and rarely falls ill.
