Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the Hawaiian Islands in the Central Pacific. Found in seaward reefs, surge channels, and lagoons with mixed rubble and sand down to 30 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the family Labridae. Features a laterally compressed body and specialized pharyngeal teeth for crushing shells. Reaches a maximum length of 13 cm.
Social Behavior: Diurnal, shy, and peaceful. Spends the day grazing on live rocks for micro-crustaceans. Lives in small harems containing one dominant male.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Exquisite orange or yellow-brown body covered with a network of black, blue, and green iridescent spots. Males exhibit more pronounced green and blue facial lines.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Demands a mature tank of at least 200 liters with plenty of established rockwork and a deep sand bed (7-10 cm) for sleeping. A secure lid is mandatory.
Diet and Feeding: Specialized micro-carnivore. Requires a well-established aquarium with a large population of copepods. Supplement with frozen mysis and brine shrimp 3-4 times daily.
Water Quality: Requires pristine conditions: temperature 23-27 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity SG 1.020-1.025. A strong protein skimmer and proper oxygenation are vital.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: 100% reef safe. House only with very peaceful, passive species (e.g. small gobies, firefish). Avoid aggressive tangs or wrasses that may intimidate them.
Aquarium Breeding: Protogynous hermaphrodite. Spawning is undocumented in captivity due to the challenges of raising pelagic larvae.
Risks and Diseases: High initial mortality rate. Extremely vulnerable to starvation, transport stress, and skin parasites if introduced into young tanks.
